Mainland (Sterea Ellada) is, in fact, the cetral part of Greece which includes Attica Prefecture (having Athens as its capital) and the island of Evia.

Mainland had already been inhabited in the Palaiolithic Era (70.000-3.000 BC), according to excavation findings in Viotia area.

Hercules, Kadmos and Apollon were some of the heroes/Gods whose origin was from mainland.

Mainland has played an important role in Greek history; worldwide known battles of antiquity have taken place there such as the Thermopylae and Plataees batles against the Persians.

It is located to the north of Peloponnese and to the south of Thessaly and Epirus. It borders the Aegean Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the west and the Corinthian Gulf to the south. Its climate is temperate along its coastlines and dry in its interior.
